Feedback - Miss Spencer

You have made a good start to your work Ashleigh, all three analysis show an understanding of the genre they belong to and you have noticed and commented on interesting elements from the films. However I would like to see a little more detail in your work. At the moment I would put your work at a level 2 and in order to improve you could:
  • Re-read your work and try to make it a little more chatty in style, I think sometimes you are trying to make it sound academic and are using unsuitable words! Especially on the Briget Jones one (e.g. specter.)
  • Remember DISTINCT, Don't Ignore,  Setting, Technical code, Iconography, Narrative, Characterisation, Themes. I think you could go through your analysis and boos it by using this framework.
  • Make sure you have covered something from each of these areas.
  • Make use of the spell check on Blogger, and check for capital letters etc, the examiner takes all of this into account.
  • Make all of your analysis more like the Woman in Black one, with lots of screen shots.

Task 2.1 Rom-Com Analysis - Briget Jones's Diary

Bridget Jones's Diary Analysis

The opening of Bridget Jones's Diary we are introduced to the specter of the film. We evidently see right away how to actor is experiencing a midlife crisis, especially in the love region. How do we know? due to music 'all by myself' playing. And substances such as alcohol, which we associate alcohol as a depressive.

example of long shot
The camera work in the film is held at an ease. There is no camera movement at all, and informs us of the character and location right away. Because there is no special detail about the character or location we are more allocated to be drawn towards the atmosphere. which we can conclude is depressing. We then switch to a close-up shot of the Tv, in which she is watching a program called 'frasier'. After we are switched between shots of close up, long and mid of the character. We gather the character isn't doing much at all which we understand is because of the mood she is portraying; the lack of movement from both the character and camera gives us a good representation of the boring lifestyle she entails.

example of quick change in shots
The mise-en-scene is rather important, especially that we are shown it quite a lot. We gather a lot about the character through these first few shots. At the beginning of the scene the character portrays a depressed lifeless character. She has resorted to drinking alcohol and is acting like a bum, lounging around in her pajamas, watching daytime TV and smoking. We know Bridget is a middle class women, as she dosent have a big tv as such, but a rather large worn couch. Her apartment is not chaotic or either tidy, but overall we get a homely feel of her surroundings. When we are shown that 'she has no new messages' we sense her isolation and is encouraged when the song quietens to sad part. After a while the song kicks again to the main chorus where we see the character develop to be extremely theatrical and dramatic. We now she her revealing her feelings by singing a dramatic love ballad, glorifying song lyrics. This scene is humorous  and we get a sense of her quirky personality, which later develops into the film.

use of mis-en scene
The editing is a simple as the camera movement, fast at the beginning slower towards the end. Most shots are put together with normal cuts, however some overlapping. We see titles such as the main actresses name, followed by another two main actors, This is a good way of advertising as if the audience like the actors then they are more than likely going to enjoy the film. the final editing mentions Bridget Jones diary.

I shall not be doing a rom com as such however its a good genre to research as we now know what aspect to not to include in our horror movie to avoid it looking like a rom com.

Task 2.1 Analysis Mission Impossible 2 Rock Climb (thriller)

mission impossible
zoom used at the begining

chirst like symbol
mission impossible can be portrayed as popular movie, but often the viewer dose not catch on to hidden meanings it interprets. I noticed as soon as the intro had started a not very popular 'zoom' had been used. I think this is scene as quiet intense and highlights near straight away the main focus which in our case was the patgonist. As we proceed on the shot turns into a long shot revealing the landscape around him. This is were the audience first truly recognizes the danger the man is in, by exploiting the location we now have more about his persona as person. which in this case denotes courage, quick thinker, independent, leader. using the longshot was effective as we see the whole landscape making our patagonist seem inferior to his natural environment. cultural music is being played in the background slightly upbeat giving tension away from the danger 100ft drop below him, this also gives us hints about the personality of the character by this alone we know the man knows what he's doing, shows experience in work field, or what he's trying to achieve. when the character drops/falls and eagles screech sound effect is played, this is important as eagles are top of the food chain they stand for independence making them superior. In addition the character also portrays a Christ like symbol, by fallings he rescues himself and as doing so pauses for a good few seconds in a potion as if his portraying Christ on the cross. This can highlight a lot to us, the directors want us to know he is an important figure within the film. Jesus was seen as immortal, meaning our patagonist.

Task 2.1 WOMEN IN BLACK ANALYSIS (horror)

WOMEN IN BLACK REVIEW

The opening to women in black is something of a distilled manner, we are introduced to the first scene by an extreme close up of a child's tea cup and tea pot. referring straight away that, children are going to be involved in the film. The viewers tend to be more sensitive when kids are involved due to their purity and age, they don't deserve harm to them. creating an uncomfortable effect on the viewer.

unlike a typical horror movie of dark contrast and remote areas, the women in black has a lot of exposure in light evidently using day light also. in addition to this factor the daylight could be used in a metaphorical sense that the exposer of the light is a resemblance of the purity of the children playing; as light and dark links with good and evil. Bringing the audience to feel more emotionally attached to the children involved, so when harm comes to them more of an effect it has upon them
close ups
through the first couple of close shots we get a very detailed idea of were the location may be set. Giving us an idea of context too. We get extreme close ups of girl pretending to sip tea and then on after of her giving the tea to a battered doll. s they are using teapots and cups and saucers, it gives the impression that the film is set in England as that is what country’s represent England with and also that’s where teapots are made, so it says to the audience that it is an

As the film has the extreme close up of
the teapot and cup, the music is very low, slow motioned and has a very funeral sound to it because of the bells, its gives the effect to the audience that it is going to be a film about death, so we get to know that the film is a in the horror genre. We also get a mid-shot of the three girls turning around and staring at nothing, this gives the effect to the audience that there is also going to be so paranormal features within the film, such as ghosts, as the girls once they've stared at nothing, look at the window start walking and crushing their dolls on the way, which tells the audience that it has a very hypnotic sense of genre to it too as they walk out of the window.
evil presences

When the girls stare at nothing we can tell that there’s a ghost there, which tells the audience that there’s an evil entity present. As the girls have been put in a type of hypnotic state to kill themselves, it makes the audience feel sorry for the children, and make you go against the ghost which makes the audience think of the ghost as the protagonist. It’s the antagonist of the film because the entity makes the girls kill themselves; this tells the audience that the ghost is going to go around killing people for some sort of reason that will be shown later on in the film.

The narrative of the film is easy to read for the audience as the film directors make it easy for the audience to understand who the antagonist is, and that the public is going to be in danger of it, so it tells us that the film is going to be about stopping it from doing that, so we get the idea that everyone else is the protagonist.

Feedback - Miss Spencer

A good evaluation Ashleigh, you have gone into detail in your analysis and made a good prelim task film. However in order to improve this you should:
Explain what happens if the 180 degree rule is broken
Explain what match on action can add to your film
Talk about things that didn't go well, you can use this learning when making your main task.
